One of the top materials for counter tops is granite. If you are looking for a more low maintenance, but still durable counter top material, then laminates are a good choice. They are also available in many, many different colors and are quite easy to wipe clean. The downside to laminates, however, is that while they are very affordable, chips or scratches in the material are very difficult to repair.
